linocut +
bookbinding

I’m home (inventory) is a collection of linocuts and printed materials.

With ‘act’ as the prompt, thinking about the performance of language and its importance in the formation of identity, self, memories, experience of the world, and emotional response.

The linocut stamps (2x2 cm) are a way to formally deconstruct written Chinese in an attempt to mirror the frustration and brokenness of losing a mother tongue in juxtaposition with the ease of an assimilated language. These were used as my main writing tool.

Zines are approximately 4.5”x7.5”, hand bound with embroidery thread in a cream-colour rag paper. Printed on tracing paper, progression through the pages creates a layering effect, each page yielding more meaning until a character is written out in full, one radical/stroke at a time. The colour of the embroidery thread signals an emotion associated with the contents.

The materiality of these was really important to me, in the feelings of holding the zine (experiencing the softness of the braided thread and the weight/texture of the rag paper).
